Homework

5. Black's history is very hard, they suffered a lot here and in the whole world. Because of that, I think all the lyrics of blues’ songs are pretty sad, black people in the past maybe thought they didn’t have the opportunity to be happy, and that is not good.

For that reason, I think sadness in blues song are explained in the hard history of slaves in the United States.

6. Is weird because perhaps lyrics are very sad, but the rhythm is pretty nice. That why I think when I listen to this kind of music, I don’t feel sad, because the way that the songs are singing is not melancholic but very optimistic, maybe the feeling of black people in that moment because “everything is gonna be aright” like the famous song of Bob Marley, that is not blues but reggae, also “black music”

  1. Hi Nati,

Thanks for a thoughtful post. I agree; you can often see the history of slavery and oppression at least indirectly if not directly in the lyrics. I also agree that there is often a pleasing tension between the lyrics and the rhythm or music itself, which is able to make you feel good or comforted despite the lyrical content. Bob Marley is also a great musician to bring into the discussion!

  2. Hi Nate,

I think blues sometimes give us some sad and helpless feelings, however, theses song may also want to make us never forget the hope. That is why they let us relax in our mind and not feel too sad.
